I am pleased and proud to help announce the launch of JennyNess Designs, the new freelance design business of my incredibly talented logo designer and fellow networking colleague, Jenny Ness Decker!
Here’s Jenny in her own words:
I’ll finally be leaving my day job in January to launch a new career. I’ve published an online portfolio at jennynessdesigns.com. I’m looking for job opportunities (both full-time positions and freelance jobs) so please keep me in mind if you (or someone you know) are in need of design services.
I am more than happy to provide a recommendation for Jenny’s work. She’s the best!
Full disclosure: Her new website features a bit of marcomm direction and messaging help from Movick Marketing. (Glad to help, Jenny!)

My business cards are finally on their way to the printer, in perfect alignment, redone for free by the same company that screwed them up the first time. The company in question is the new Kinko’s, now called FedEx Office.
All it took was five fruitless phone calls to customer service (all of which ended with them saying I had made the error), one fruitless store visit, lots of complaining and gnashing of teeth, and then, this morning, one quick and easy phone call to the corporate office in Texas (followed by two calls with the production customer service person, Richie, who was incredibly friendly, professional, apologetic, and helpful).
Me: “Customer service supervisor, please… Hello? I hope you can help me… Here’s my problem… [blah blah blah...]“
Supervisor: “My name is Ginger, and sure, I can fix that for you. No problem.”
Me: “Really? That’s great! Thank you!”
Supervisor: ”Here’s my direct number and my email address. Be sure to send me your order confirmation. I will personally review your file before it goes to print to make sure we don’t have the same problems with visible crop lines again, then I will refund your money for the second order.”
Me: “Whew, thanks so much, Ginger!”
And to think, I was just about to blast FedEx Office (now partnered/merged with VistaPrint, by the way) all over the blogospere. They really dodged a bullet by solving my problem on the spot!
After that, a quick call to my designer Jenny got me a new PDF (no crop marks) ready for uploading. Boom, just like that, no more stressing out. (Think I’ll go for a run later to make sure the stress is really gone!)

This dream I’ve had for years–giving my freelance business a real name and making it “official” with a logo, website, blog, and business cards–is just about to come true. I’m getting ready to go live with this site, and it feels extraordinarily good.
Today, after ordering my new business cards online (to arrive in 7 days), I’m taking stock of what’s been completed so far.
All that’s left on my checklist, besides launching and announcing this site’s existence to the wider world, is creating a profile on LinkedIn and creating a business profile page on Facebook, with the goal of accumulating loads of ”fans” and getting a bunch of new clients!
Create website: check
Populate with content: check
Assign categories and tags: check
Add photos: check
Get feedback/proof: check

T minus 10 to launch…

I am proud to unveil my new company logo for Movick Marketing!
The fabulous artist behind this vibrant logo and color palette is Jenny Ness Decker of JennyNess Designs. (Explore Jenny’s beautiful work online at http://jennyness.wordpress.com/design-portfolio/.) Jenny is about to launch her own freelance business (stay tuned for an announcement and link to her new website). As part of our barter arrangement, I am helping her polish up her resume, web content, and marketing strategy.
This is part of a multistep process toward growing and marketing my freelance writing business to a new audience.
Step 1: create a blog (done)
Step 2: post resume and portfolio online (done)
Step 3: design/print business cards (almost done)
Step 4: create a website (next up, by June)
Step 5: launch/announce new web presence (by end of June)
Step 6: go viral… create business profile on Facebook and join LinkedIn (by early July)

My barter arrangement–logo design/color palette for web marketing writing–is in full swing, now that I’ve received the first draft of logo designs. There are many more to choose from than I was expecting, and the different styles and colors are tantalizing. I want to choose wisely, so I will take my time and maybe even poll (anonymously of course) some fellow freelancers to get some other opinions on what speaks to my audience. Stay tuned… The winning logo will appear on this blog!

My (sort-of) self-titled company does not have a logo, and now that I’m handing out business cards and building up my presence on the web through this blog, I think it’s time to get one.
One of my networking groups includes designers as well as writers and editors, so perhaps I could trade services with a designer to get a free logo. Maybe I could offer to write some new web copy, help with a marketing plan, collaborate on a proposal for a new client, overhaul a resume–whatever it takes. Quid pro quo.
Yep. It’s time to send out a query.
